Is there an age limit for hiring a boat?

The main hirer must be aged 18 years or over. Identification must be shown with proof of address at request.

Can I go through locks?

Our boats have a river licence only, not a canal licence, therefore we can not go through the Diglis Lock at Worcester. We can however go through the Upper Lode Lock at Tewkesbury, and this is a manned lock so no need to worry about how to work it.

How far can I go?

It depends how many hours you book for, which boat you go in and how fast you travel, but on average if travelling at the speed limit of 5 knots/6mph.

From Upton to Worcester – 10.5 miles so approx 3.5 hours (against river flow)
From Upton to Tewkesbury – 6 miles so approx 1.15 hour (with river flow)

What do I need to bring with me?

Wear suitable clothes and shoes. We all know how unpredictable the great British weather can be you may even want to consider bringing a waterproof coat or umbrella just in case! If it’s a sunny day, drinking water, sunglasses, sun cream and a hat are always useful things to bring. A camera. A fully charged mobile phone in case of emergency.

For fishing in particular – if you are not familiar with boat fishing you will find that it is always colder/hotter/windier/wetter on the boat than it is on the bank, so remember sunblock and polaroid sunglasses in the summer and an extra couple of layers in the winter.

I’m on holiday – where can I stay in the area?

The Swan Hotel, Upton-upon-Severn. Mention that you are a customer of Severn Expeditions and you could get special room rates. Contact them direct to enquire and book.

Upton Old Street B&B also offer a really great service for a fantastic price! www.oldstreetbandb.co.uk

Will I need to re-fuel the boat?

Every boat is handed over with a full tank of fuel which is plenty enough for a full day hire as long as you drive the boat sensibly and follow the correct instructions.

Anymore fuel required will be at the expense of the Hirer. There is a petrol station situated at the Upton Marina, Upton upon Severn.

I am hiring a self-drive boat for fishing – will I need to bring my own equipment?

Yes you will need to bring all of your own fishing equipment and bait.

I am hiring a skippered boat for guided fishing – will I need to bring my own equipment?

If you are having a Guided fishing trip our guide will have all the equipment and tackle available for use, he will discuss details with you prior to the day.

For any other guided trips you will need to bring all of your own fishing equipment and bait. However, this is something we are looking into and hope to have fishing equipment for hire very soon.

What Happens If The Weather Is Really Bad On The Day Of My Hire Or The River Is In Flood?

We pride ourselves on giving our customers flexibility, therefore in very bad weather conditions, or if the river is in flood, you will have the opportunity to reschedule your booking. You will have 12 months from the date of hire to re-use your booking, no problem!

If it is just light showers then we recommend you simply pack a raincoat and hat.

Can I bring my dog on board?

Yes dogs are welcome on the boats. There is an additional charge to cover cleaning costs, £10 for one dog and £15 for 2 dogs or more. Please be aware that pets are not covered under the Company’s insurance policy so it would be at the Hirers risk and the Hirer shall be liable for the cost of any damage.
